Lighthouse Classes - Student Terms, Conditions & Information

We are specialist contractors to leisure and community centres. These are the terms and conditions for all students attending weekly classes provided by Lighthouse Tai Chi®. By attending classes with our instructors, you agree to these terms and conditions, in addition to any rules or contract you have agreed with the centre or venue.

You must provide your name, address and contact phone number to the centre and check in at reception whenever you attend. Your name must also be taken by our instructor at every class. This is a legal requirement for insurance and safety protocols.

For how we use your information, please see our Data Protection Policies.

Are you ready to exercise?
You must be physically and mentally able to take responsibility for yourself or attend with a suitable carer. Please note that your carer may have to pay for their place; always check with the centre before booking a place or attending. Please see our Safeguarding Policy

Please read the following questions:
  • Has your doctor said that you have a heart condition and you should only do physical activity recommended by a doctor?
  • Do you feel pain in your chest when you do physical activity?
  • In the past month, have you had chest pain when you were not doing physical activity?
  • Do you lose your balance because of dizziness, or do you ever lose consciousness?
  • Do you have a bone or joint problem that could be made worse by physical activity?
  • Is your doctor currently prescribing drugs for your blood pressure or heart condition?
  • Do you know of any reason why you should not do physical activity?
If you answered yes to one or more questions, you must ask your doctor, for medical clearance and information about specific exercise limitations. Always get your doctor's clearance: If you have any injuries, illnesses or conditions, or are on any medications, talk to your doctor to make sure it's okay to exercise. Some medications may affect your heart rate, and it's important to know how that may relate to your participation.

If you have a heart failure condition, we will require a letter from your doctor or specialist to confirm that they give permission for you to do tai chi and qigong classes.

We do not keep any other medical information about students, so it is your responsibility to determine if the session is suitable for you and to follow instruction appropriately. Our instructors will try to support you with adaptations, but these are general adaptions, and not medically qualified advice. The instructor will not know your medical information, even if you have told them in the past. They can only give advice about tai and qigong. Please do not ask for physiotherapy exercises or personalized routines. Individual training cannot be provided in group sessions. At all times you are responsible for yourself and your wellbeing.

Should you feel unwell, experience pain or become injured during the class, you must stop participating and let the instructor know immediately. If you make no disclosure to our instructor or the centre, and later make accusations or allegations to other people or the public, you may be held responsible for defamation, libel or slander and there could be legal consequences. Please consider your actions carefully.

Your Behaviour: students are responsible for their own behaviour at all times. Disrupting the session or preventing others from learning or enjoying the session is never acceptable. Students are expected to learn tai chi with people of all ages, backgrounds, genders, abilities, and cultures. It is not acceptable to make another student, or the instructors feel uncomfortable or unwelcome. Harassment bullying or persistent aggressive behaviour or unwanted attention will result in a ban from all Lighthouse sessions.

Bans are also enforced if a student is intoxicated or under the influence of drugs, commits an illegal act whilst attending a class, behaves in an abusive, violent or threatening manner towards the tutor, other staff or any other student at any time (in person or online); disrupts the classes or causes any injury to others or damage to the premises or equipment.

Most people attending our sessions, enjoy having the time out from the stresses and strains of daily life and personal challenges. Please try to leave your cares and worries at the door, so you can enjoy learning and relaxation. Sharing information about personal problems may not be appropriate. Asking for transportation or favours, soliciting help and advice, or making unwanted invitations may cause embarrassment, distress and upset. An official complaint may be made, and you will be asked to leave the sessions.

The instructors can only give advice or assistance to students that relates directly to tai chi, qigong and the content of the classes. Please do not ask our instructors for help with transport, for any personal favours, or for contact outside the sessions. Consider carefully about disclosing any distressing information about your personal life, not related to the class. We aim to be friendly and supportive, but we are not mental health specialists or therapists. The sessions need to feel safe and supportive for everyone, including us.

Strong smells and perfumes: to provide a safe and pleasant environment at sessions, we ask that you are aware of personal hygiene, perfumes and any sprays that you use. Strong fragrances can cause breathing difficulties and allergic reactions and are not suitable for physical exercise. When attending aqua tai chi, always shower before entering the pool to prevent irritation to the skin and eyes.

What to wear
Shoes: we recommend wearing thin soled shoes that do not have a strong grip on the bottom and have a flexible sole, such as standard pumps or plimsolls that are clean and comfortable. Boots, outdoor shoes and shoes with heels are not allowed. Trainers and running shoes will affect your balance, foot sensitivity and create pull on the joints. We accept no liability for any injury caused by wearing inappropriate footwear.

For aqua classes: aqua shoes, water socks or aqua footwear that gives some grip on the pool floor

Clothing: Clothes should be clean and comfortable, that allow you to move freely without tangling your limbs or body. Due to the nature of the movements, and the instructors needing to see your posture clearly, skirts and dresses are not appropriate. Trousers, leggings or shorts with a t-shirt or sweatshirt are recommended. We accept no liability for any injury, discomfort, embarrassment or damage caused by inappropriate clothing. Clothing with offensive wording or imagery is not allowed.

For aqua classes: a full swimsuit that is suitable for sports and mixed gender classes. We recommend wearing a swimsuit that covers the heart area, zipped swim jackets that cover the shoulders and chest and a hat to keep your hair out of the water and improve heat retention.

Jewellery: Dangly necklaces, bracelets and earrings may catch in your clothes or interfere with your movement. Any items that may break or come off in the water are not recommended. Lighthouse Tai Chi® accepts no responsibility for items that are lost, damaged or stolen.

Giving Feedback: please make any issues known to the instructor at the time or after the class where possible. We will always try to resolve problems fairly, promptly and discreetly. Should you feel unable to talk the instructor, please email us at lighthousetaichi1@gmail.com and let us know in as much detail as possible, what the problem is and how you would like to resolve the situation.

We will always let the centre management know about any issues and you are of course welcome to contact them directly about your concerns. Lighthouse Tai Chi® will inform you and/or the centre management what measures and actions will be taken as a result of the complaint.
